How I Built My Fashion Business by Designing My Own Fabrics

When I first started my fashion business in Lagos, I focused on making clothes that fit well and on following trends. But there was something missing—my brand didn’t have a unique identity. I used fabric that was available to every tailor in the market. I knew I had talent, but I blended in.

I learned a lot about fabric design when I took a class with MasterArtClasses.org. Learning how to design my own textiles using traditional Nigerian techniques opened a whole new world for me. All of a sudden, I wasn’t just a fashion designer anymore. I was someone who created stories, culture, and identity, and all of these were part of the fabric.

I created a new collection of prints that felt authentically mine. My prints were inspired by Yoruba adire, Igbo uli symbols, and northern motifs. The response was incredible. Clients in Lagos started referring their friends. I started getting messages from the U.S., the U.K., and even Brazil. People wanted something different, something real. My Instagram engagement went up a lot. Orders became consistent. For the first time, I didn’t just have clients—I had fans.

Designing my own fabrics improved my creativity. It made my brand more popular. It made me stand out in a busy market. It made my work art, not just clothing.
